The article hyper-linked there is on muscle gain and water retention. You know that age old question, I'm getting stronger and slimmer but I weigh as much (more more) than I used to. Breaks the whole concept down really well and is easy to understand!

Diet
IIFYM
IIFYM (If It Fits Your Macros). I have personally found this approach to diet modification really handy. I don't know about you guys but when I put myself on a restricted diet I do a weird "OMG I'M BEING DEPRIVED I'M GOING TO EAT ALL THE THINGS" after about a week of avoiding bread and chocolate and ice-cream and cheese (that's a lie. I've actually always stoutly refused to cut cheese from my diet. It's too good). Anyway, IIFYM has a basic premise of "anything works so long as it fits within your set calories/carbs/protein/fat macros". It doesn't mean "stuff your face with whatever you want to eat" but it does mean that you can still enjoy a sensible (Oh, no need to get all hissy. I personally think that cutting things out of your diet only makes you miserable and doesn't foster a healthy relationship with food if you're just going to go straight back to eating it after you've met your goal weight - yes, I'm sure it works for plenty of people, no, I know, no, I don't agree) relationship with food whilst you're undergoing modification to your dietary habits. For me IIFYM means a real, constant change to my dietary habits that will be a long-term change, not a short term deprivation.

Bearing in mind I've lost about 2st and a bit over the past year or so I think it works fairly well. My problem is always with portion control though (and that really is a seperate issue!).

This is a site that I feel has saved my life. No, really. 3 years ago I was hugely overweight, depressed and suffering (aching, couldn't breathe, tired...). The community I built on this site have supported me, cheered me on, grieved with me, condoled me....and that is MFP's key. Community. It IS calorie counting app in it's main incarnation, but that suits me.
